Puberty is filled with social anxiety. Many related research findings show that social anxiety exists on college campus with varying degrees and exerts many a negative effect on college students'development of personalities as well as their successful socialization. Therefore, social anxiety has consisted one of the significant research topics in psychological health education. Researches from abroad and at home indicate that coping is the mediating variable between stress and health. What's more, the coping styles are closely related to mental health. Independent colleges are very special compared with other kinds of colleges, which may result to some special psychological characters of its enrolled students.According to the former cognition of social anxiety and coping styles as well as by means of Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS) and Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ), th e author conducts a survey on481students'social anxiety and coping styles of five indep endent colleges in Wuhan city so as to find whether there is a difference existing between the independent college students and traditional college students in their current status a nd characteristics of social anxiety and coping styles, thus to testify the relationship betw een social anxiety and coping styles. Based on this survey, the author recruits24college s tudents who are of high level of social anxiety, divides them into experiment group and c ontrol group and devise a set of group intervention programs using the coping styles as th e starting point to rectify college students'negative coping styles and help them establish positive ones in order to raise their coping abilities and further improve their social anxiet y scale. After the group intervention, the pretest and posttest results of the two groups'res ults are calculated and analyzed. Also, a follow-up interview is done three months later.Research findings are as follows:(1) There exists a county type difference but no school type difference on social anxiety of college students. The same as other types of college students, social anxiety apparently exists among independent college students and with a worrying situation. In addition, significant difference is only displayed in hometown.(2) There exists no significant difference of coping styles usage between independent college students and traditional college students, followed by:problem solving, seeking help,illusion,avoiding,rationalization,auto-punition. Coping style factors differences in gender subject grades and whether they are only child or not.(3) The correlativity between college students'social anxiety and coping styles could also be applicable to independent college students:social anxiety have obvious negative correlation with factors on problem solving and seeking help, however, form a positive correlation with factors on auto-punition, illusion, avoiding and rationalization. Problem solving, auto-punition, seeking help and illusion works significantly in predicting social anxiety, among which problem solving and seeking help could offer a reverse predication while auto-punition and illusion offers a positive predication.(4) The group intervention program using the coping style as the starting point is somewhat scientific, feasible and reliable. It could not only rectify negative coping styles and help to cultivate a more positive and mature style, but also plays an effective and continuous role in removing college student's social anxiety. However, countinuity in the role of coping styles is still to be improved.
