Bilingual Education has been carried out in many parts of China at present, which is drawing an ever-increasing attention. It is a pleasure to see that bilingual education, as a new method of teaching foreign language, is effectively changing the way of English teaching and learning. Nevertheless, compared to other countries, most of whom implement bilingual education mainly based on cultural construction, bilingual education in China seeks nothing but the lingual aim and is destined to confront with "cultural conflict", and even "cultural shock". In view of this, the dissertation attempts to explore domestic bilingual education based on the cultural perspective and to make some theoretical explorations in some controversial issues in Chinese bilingual education.The dissertating consists of seven chapters:Chapter one introduces bilingual education in Australia. The bilingual education program named LOTE (Languages Other Than English) was initiated by the Queensland Department of Education with an aim to enhance the students' foreign language proficiency and develop multicultural sensitivity as well. Three state high schools and one private school were involved in this program and all of them achieved great successes. Their precious experiences in the construction of teaching models, the selection of students, the development of teaching materials, the in-service training of teaching staff and establishment of appraisal system will be definitely beneficial to bilingual education practice in China.Chapter two focuses on bilingual education in the U.K. and Ireland. In recent years, Scotland, Welsh and England of the U.K. have promoted bilingual education to some extent. However, they take on various characteristics in bilingual education for different purposes. For instance, bilingualism in Scotland and Welsh usually concerns protection and restoration of the indigenous minority language and culture, while bilingual education policy in England is much more regarded as a way of melting minority immigrants into majority society. Ireland, as a small nation in the east part of Europe, has a close tie with the UK both in terms of language and culture. Bilingual education in Ireland has witnessed ebbing and flowing and its implications will be useful for Chinese bilingual education.Chapter three illustrates bilingual education in Singapore.
