Jiangnan Sizhu (literally"silk and bamboo"), mainly made up of string and wind musical instruments, is an ensemble performance popular in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Its elegance and gentle style is a fine manifestation of the exquisite beauty of Jiangnan area. It is one of the most typical music representing the regional culture. This thesis sees profound research on the cultural connotation and enables us to acquaint the source and developing tendency of this music comprehensively, to understand the social vicissitudes'influence on its cultural spirit, and furthermore to penetrate into the core of aesthetic value of Jiangnan Sizhu.Besides, as the strong impact on the values assimilation and aesthetic homogenization followed by the current economic globalization, Jiangnan Sizhu is fading away. In 2006, Jiangnan Sizhu was listed on the state-class Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is significant to realize its cultural connotation, its spiritual root and effectively protect and develop Jiangnan Sizhu. Through contrastive analysis and inductive synthesis methods, this thesis, in four aspects, namely the artistic features, cultural connotation of ontic music, times change of surviving environment and comparisons with other music, has an exploration and analysis on Jiangnan Sizhu's musical form and its concrete cultural context so as to seek the close relationship between Jiangnan Sizhu and the Jiangnan regional culture and in addition, to propose some suggestions to the survival and development of Jiangnan Sizhu in present context.
