Irrespective of Chinese or Vietnamese, measure words grip great significance and are frequently utilised in both languages. Errors inevitably occur when Vietnamese students study Chinese units due to the distinction between the manner of using measure words in two countries even though there exist indeed some resemblances thereto. The information and data relating to the mistakes committed by Vietnamese students to use Chinese units are herein collected through the questionnaire on which the error rate, trend and types identified and the causes analysed are based. Suggestions for teaching measure words are brought up accordingly which are not only beneficial for Vietnamese student to comprehend Chinese units by enhancing the teaching effect but also provide an invaluable case study for the research toward learning Chinese as the second language.Methods of comparative analysis, questionnaire surveying and error analysis are adopted as the main methodologies in this article. The categories, semantic features, grammars and applications of the measure words in Chinese and Vietnamese are systematically and deeply compared in the theory of the comparative analysis to found out the similarities and differences in between these two and locate the difficulties encountered by Vietnamese students learning Chinese units and reasons they make mistakes. The questionnaire compiled with45No. A-level units to be examined is issued to50No. Vietnamese students from which the statistic figure are refined and represented with Excel programme in order to grasp how well Vietnamese students may apply Chinese units and understand their mistakes in common. The error analysis is the principal approach for study.The most commonplace misuage in the application of Chinese units by Vietnamese students embrace hui (95%),gen (93%), kuai (91%), hao (90%), zhang (84%) which are respectively messed with ge (49%), tiao (49%), ba (51%), zuo (88%), pan (47%).It is also discovered that the types of the errors choosing Chinese units and the reasons for such occurring mistakes as the similarity of sound, meaning and shape of words and misusage of the unit called "ge" in which case from the actual situation that Vietnamese students study Chinese measure words are resulted from negative impact by mother language, negative interference with and transfer from purpose language and unsuitable learning environment.Our suggestions include strengthening the practical study of teaching Chinese units to Vietnamese students,amending the teaching materials and paying particular attention to the assistance to overcome the negative interference with and transfer from purpose language when teaching Vietnamese students with intermediate level the Chinese measure words which owe to be based on maximum accuracy.
