Entering the 21th century, great changes have taken place both in the learning environment of college study and in the thinking mode on the part of learners. If we continue to use the out-dated theory to direct the present-day college study, we'll confront with many insolvable problems. Therefore, we are obligated to probe some positive methods that are adaptable to the new environment and new characteristics on the part of the learners.Individual non-linear study is a problem of great realistic significance. It includes four aspects:1. it is on the higher level of linear study; 2. it is the signal of maturity of thinking mode on the party of the individual learners; 3. it is the signal of creative study; and 4. it is the sustain of life-long study. Non-linear study embodies the following characteristics:1. non-linear study is based on linear study; 2. non-linear study is closely integrated with linear study; 3. non-linear study depends on environment; 4. the environment of informational study helps bring about non-linear study; 5. non-linear study is especially important in the higher learning stage; 6. non-linear study is a must of advanced study; 7. individual learning needs nonlinear guidance.
