A Study Of Mei Yiqi's Idea Of Higher Education And Its Practice

Mei Yiqi is a famous modern educator in our country. He cemented the develepment foundation of the cross-strait Tsinghua University with outstanding governance practice. After the 10 years expanding, The higer education in our country have already entered the connotation development stage. It has theoretical and practical significance for us to research Mei Yiqi's school-running conception and value pursuit which embodied in the educational practice in Tsinghua University and West Associated University. It will help us rebuilt university spirit, push forward higher education reform, improve the quality of higher education.Mei Yiqi's idea of higher education was formed and perfected in process of practice of running a university continuously, each aspect of which was interrelated and premise mutually. Firstly, the core of Mei's idea of university education was general education. He stressed that if the individual wanted to achieve "full personality" education, he must implement general education, regarding culturing a sound personality as the goal of education. Secondly, the education of full personality should shaped and conducted by means of culturing the six skills from moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, labor, social education. Furthermore, higher school should also focus on the full personality of teachers, which can facilitate the cultivation of the students'full personality. Finally, in order to achieve the above three aspects, there was a prerequisite, that is overall planning management. Only by this, the higher education can be provided more enough space for its development and innovation.This paper mainly uses the historical research and literature research. Firstly, based on his experiences, and mainly described Mei Yiqi's idea of higher education and practice of running a university, this thesis had showed three stages of his idea of higher education:forming(1904-1931), mature (1931-1937) and perfect (1937-1946). Then, I summarizes four basic connotations of his education thought:The master theory, The general theory, The whole personality education thought and The management thoughts that unified professor managing and manage the headmaster. And concludes three significant features:national and modern, inherited and innovative, inclusive. Lastly, This research prove into the theory and practical value of the reform of general education, the construction of Top-University for Universities and the development of multi campus university.
