Martial art is an excellent traditional sport activity and a precious legacy of Chinese culture. In the social transformational period of China, a new form of martial art which has competitive characteristic has become the representation of martial art, and it has become an indispensable part of Chinese and the world's competitive sports. In order to promote the martial art, we should provide a good environment for it to develop. Using documentaries, interviews, logical analysis and comparisons as the major research methods, this paper studies the characteristics of Chinese competitive martial art in the transformational period, makes a systematical and theoretical research of the environmental characteristics and gives some strategies to optimize the environment for the competitive martial art.The research findings are as follows:There are three characteristics of the outside environment of the development of martial art in the transformational period of our country. Firstly, after researching from organizing competition, exercises among common people and the culture study, I find that the martial art has become more and more popular, more and more scientific and more and more professional. Secondly, the stable political environment, the sustainable economical development and the harmonious society and culture's diversified demands provide a good environment for the martial art. Thirdly, the basic characteristic is"work together as a country", besides this, a new characteristic----"the government leading, the society auto-manage, the market auto-develop"has formed. There are three characteristics of the internal environment too. The first one is the managerial characteristics of the martial art in the transformational period: the organizing and managing of martial arts are both controlled by the National martial arts management center. The managing model is the cooperation of National martial arts management center, National martial arts institute and Martial arts association. Thus, the administration managers, operators, operating managers and supervisors are mixed together. Therefore, lots of system disadvantages are created due to this model, such as: the ambivalence of responsibilities and rights, difficulties exist in the managing process, hard to operate and the administrative of the martial art. The second characteristic is its resources managing characteristic: the development and usage of resources are limited and complicated. It lacks comprehensiveness, system and specialty. The last characteristic is its characteristics of security system: The security system of the sportsmen, coaches and judges is still to be improved. The financial input to the competition and technology development is not enough. What's more, the related strict laws and regulations are needed in a large extent. After the study of the characteristics of the competitive martial art, some strategies are concluded as follows: firstly, stick to the reform and development of the martial art, and the government should leave more independence to the society, and perfect the professional system of the martial art. Secondly, further strengthen the responsibilities of the State Sport General Administration and draw up relevant laws and regulations and make sure they can be carried out. Thirdly, perfect the training pattern and guarantee system of the coaches and referees. Fourthly, optimize the system of training of athletes and the organization of the competition. Fifthly, strengthen the harmonious development of the competitive martial art and the Olympic Games with the aid of the government. Sixthly, understand and master the law of the competitive art and the environment to promote the development of it.
