Universities are the cradle of humanity, as well as the base for its spread and development, and the humanity in universities includes not only the common connotations but also its own characteristics, which is generally shown as the spirit of independence and freedom, of criticism, of innovation, and of the cultivation of talents. The spirits of universities epitomize humanity, which could be divided into the following layers:firstly, from the layer of knowledge it is shown as the spirit of seeking for truth, the serious and prudent attitude and the favorable atmosphere for study. Secondly, on the layer of morality, it is reflected in the goal for culturing of talents who combine ability with political integrity, the teachers of great professional virtue, and the students with healthy and active value on life and the world and strong responsibility and sense of mission. The development of market economy has a gradually increasing influence on the humanity in universities. Therefore, taken this as a breakthrough point, this paper mainly discussed the following three ascpects:Part one, the view on humanity in Marxism and the humanity in university. Emphasis has been laid in the following three points, the connotation of "humane" and "humanity", the humanity in Marxism which was illustrated by the theory of comprehensive development of human being, and the meaning of humanity in universities and it development, especially in modern university at the age of science and technology and the difficulties in its development under the condition of market economy.Part two, the current situation of humanity in universities under the socialist market economy and the cause for the problems. The positive influence of market economy in the building of humanity in universities is shown in that the competitiveness of market economy instills enthusiasm into college students, with higher requirement on the quality of college students, the market economy encourages students to enter the society and enriches the cultural life in universities. While the negative influence of market economy on this point include:the marketization of students'need, namely, the choice of major depends mainly on the employment or whether it is popular but not on their interests. This caused the philistinism and market orientation of university education. In the pursuit of material interests, some universities lost their direction. Materialism is corrupting the education system. The goal of education shifts from the building of ones personality to following the needs of the market. Most universities emphasis the building of students'ability but neglected their personality. Humanities lost their position in universities because it can not bring direct economic profits. Some universities extremely lack of academic atmosphere, and the quantitative management system erodes the existence space of academic research which needs time and patience. Profound changes have taken place in the value of college students. Immersed in the culture of consumption, they are extremely indifferent toward the traditional culture and high art.Part three, the ways of cultivating humanities in university. We should pay attention to the following points:firstly, emphasis should be laid on the humanity education for the whole society to optimize the social environment. Secondly, reforms should be carried out on the curriculum of humanity courses both in form and content. Thirdly, we should reestablish the position of humanity in university by clearly define the relation between "Science" and "humanity". Fourthly, we should take the ideological and political theory course as the front, accompanied by the quality education course, to culture the humanity in universities. Fifthly, we should enhance the culture building on campus to create good environment for humanity. Sixthly, we should bring the guidance function of teachers into full play to build healthy personality for students to realize the unification of teaching knowledge and educated people.
