A Study On The Status And Influence Factors Of Private Tutoring Of Urban Junior High School Students

As an educational phenomenon, private tutoring becomes more and more intensified in recent years. It occurs outside the mainstream school, mainly to improve the examination scores of students, so it also known as "shadow education." In this study, we took three cities which included in the city of Lanzhou, the city of Wuwei and the city of Linxia in Gansu Province as cases. Using the methods of questionnaires and interviews, the information of 1125 junior high school students in these cities were collected and current tutorial status were known and the factors which influence the private tutoring were analyzed. Here are the main findings of the study:1.The scale of private tutoring in Gansu Province are large and a large number of students has entered for it;2.For the junior high school students in Gansu Province, English and Math are the dominant tutoring subjects;3.For the majority of junior high school students in Gansu Province, the intensity of private tutoring is not too high, because most of them only take part in one or two tutorial class;4.Private tutoring didn't bring big economic burden to most junior high school students in Gansu Province;5.Most of the students in Gansu Province who enter for the private tutoring have a positive effect and evaluation on it;6.Urban junior high school students themselves and their parents are the main force which promotes the development of the industry of private tutoring, their purpose is to obstain higher academic achievement;7.The following eight variables influence the students'choice of entering for private tutoring significantly: birth place, student's own attitude towards private tutoring, student's father's education degree, the attitude of student's parents'towards private tutoring, student'sgrade, school attending type and study expectations of student's himself. 8.The variables which include in student's score recognized by his parents, the level of tutoring teachers, student's feeling after tutoring have significant effect on the students'achievement evaluation after tutoring.According to the above conclusions, the suggestion to standardize private tutoring have been provided, it includes: the education input should be increased in order to promote a balanced development of regional education; the education evaluation body should be reformed in order to promote the all-round development of students and the implementation of quality education; more attention to the education quality and the process fairness of mainstream schools should be paid in order to eliminate education corruption; correct orientation of private tutoring should be had and it also should be regulated in a right way; the rational ideas of private tutoring and the correct talent cultivation idea should be set up; favorable conditions should be created in order to provide students with good private tutoring.
