Investigation And Research On The Current Situation Of Private Supplementary Tutoring For Students In Urban High-quality Junior Middle Schools

By using the method of literature review,questionnaire survey and interview,this study investigated 1034 students from five high-quality junior middle schools in Changsha and interviewed with some parents and managers of private supplementary tutoring institutions to understand the current situation of private supplementary tutoring in Changsha high-quality junior middle schools.The results show that: first,the scale of students from urban high quality junior middle schools participating in private supplementary tutoring is large.75.7% of the students in the sample participated in private supplementary tutoring,and up to 86.1% of the students have participated in private supplementary tutoring(excluding nearly 6 months).On the whole,the proportion of girls participating in private supplementary tutoring is higher than that of boys;the higher the level of parents' education,the higher the proportion of students participating in it;the proportion of students who want to enter the key high school after graduat ion to participate in private supplementary tutoring is more than 80%.Second,the intensity of private supplementary tutoring of students is greater.More than half of the students attend private supplementary tutoring in three or more subjects;during the ordinary term time,the test period,and the summer vacation,22.3%,22.0% and 40.4% of the students spent more than 8 hours per week,and 22.5% of them had more than 20 hours per week during the summer vacation.Third,the number of students attending private supplementary tutoring in mathematics and English is the largest,and the motivation of students themselves is strong.Forth,whether to live in school,the nature of the school and the highest educational level of their mothers have a significant impact on whether students participate in private supplementary tutoring;the nature of the school,the ranking of grade scores,the highest edu cational level of their parents have a significant impact on the intensity of private supplementary tutoring for students.Fifth,the majority of parents and students hold a positive evaluation on the effect of private supplementary tutoring,among which m ore than four-fifths of students agree that private supplementary tutoring is helpful to improve test results,and more than 70% of students agree that it helps to improve their review skills and their confidence in the examination;students' gender,grade,whether to live in school,the ranking of grade scores,father's highest educational level have a significant impact on the effect of students to participate in private supplementary tutoring.The conclusions are as follows: the phenomenon of urban high-quality junior middle school students participating in private supplementary tutoring will exist for a long time;private supplementary tutoring makes up for the deficiency of mainstream school education to a certain extent;private supplementary tutoring has limitations in promoting students' effective learning;parents should treat private supplementary tutoring rationally and pay attention to helping their children form the habit of independent learning.
