Private supplementary tutoring is the educational extracurricular activity funded by individuals to improve students' school scores, which has been fully popularized and thriving in Chinese society, making a series of impacts on the communities, schools, families, and individuals. The current empirical studies lack relative theoretical basis, and research data of which are mostly from other projects rather than the specific data focused on private supplementary tutoring. Besides, comprehensive perspectives are needed for the research of private supplementary tutoring, since previous studies focused only on the specific aspects, such as the expense, impacts and so on.Based on the above reasons, the thesis takes Z county, Y city of X province as a case to learn about the phenomenon and determinants of private supplementary tutoring by the survey on 500 junior high school students. The conclusion is presented as below. There 's a large amount of students (78%) participating in private supplementary tutoring, in which girls account for a larger proportion than boys; rural registered students account for a larger proportion than urban ones; the ratio of participation get increased with the growth of family income and educational degree of mothers, and the reduce of mothers' occupational stratification. And there are two types of private supplementary tutoring, i.e. cultivation-for -higher quality type, and complement-the- gap type.Private supplementary tutoring of junior high students is intense. From the perspective of subjects, math and science account for the most. As to expense, rural registered students spend more money on tutoring than urban registered students. And the expense gets increased with the growth of fathers' educational degree, mothers'occupational stratification and family's yearly income. And most of the students and parents make positive comments on extracurricular tutoring. There's a significant impact of students'genders, parents'occupational stratification and family yearly income on the participation of extracurricular tutoring. There is also a significant influence of students' genders, mothers' occupational stratification, parents'educational degree and family yearly income on the intensity of extracurricular tutoring. And there's a significant impact of parents' occupational stratification, fathers'educational degree, family yearly income and students' scores on the expense of extracurricular tutoring. On the conclusions above, the thesis analyzed reasons accounting for these phenomena from the perspectives of multiple subjects based on theories of human capital, educational equality, and educational evaluation. At last, the thesis provides suggestions for subjects like governments, extracurricular tutoring organizations and parents:educational balance between rural and urban areas should be promoted; mainstream schools are supposed to enhance their educational quality and pay attention to equality of educated process; the evaluative system of education should be reformed so as to promote students' comprehensive development and implementation of quality-originated education; extracurricular tutoring need to be treated correctly and reasonably, and normalized scientifically; develop a correct conception of cultivating qualified personnel.
