There are some problems of the uneven development in education in Nigeria from the colonial period, especially, the gender differences in basic education. After the independence of Nigeria in 1960, some related policies have been drawn up on the development of girls'basic education in the nation. Although the great progress has been made, there are still many shortcomings in the course of the development, such as the imperfect polices and poor enforcement in the development of girls' basic education. However, the development of girls'basic education still falls behind that of boys'. In order to solve the problems and to change the current situation of the development of girls' basic education, the federal government of Nigeria has made plans and has formulated a comprehensive multi-level policies and measures under the help of international society. Because China and Nigeria are both developing countries, they share many general characteristics of the problems about girls'basic education. Based on the above-mentioned condition, the research on the problems and measures of girls'basic education in Nigeria will give the useful experience on exploring the solutions to the problems of girls'basic education in western areas of China.The thesis specifically studies the generally historical and present situation of girls'basic education of Nigeria, the problems and influencing factors of girls'basic education in Nigeria and explores the measures for advice to the government. The thesis is done based on the analysis of numerous documents with scientific approaches such as statistical analysis and factor analysis.The thesis mainly consists of five parts. The first part has introduced the historical and current situation of girls'basic education in Nigeria. It has been divided into three periods by time, that is, before the colonial period, colonial period and the period after independence. This part'makes a detailed explanation for the development situation of girls' basic education respectively according to the different period.The second part has analyzed the problems of girls' basic education. The problems have been analyzed from five different aspects as follows. Firstly, the big number of female illiteracy. Secondly, the lower enrollment rate of girls. Thirdly, the phenomenon of girls'drop-out of school is much serious. Fourthly, girls'performance is relatively poorer. Finally, the development of girls'basic education is imbalance.The third part has analyzed and generalized the factors that influence the development of girls' basic education. These factors have been summarized at the national government level, school level and family level. For the factors from national government level, the analysis is mainly about policy factors, economic factors and cultural factors. The analysis of schools level factors is from the school environment factors, the teacher factors and the curriculum and teaching factors. However, the factors of family level include parents'factors and girls own factors. Through the analysis, this part attempts to show the causes of the problems of girls' basic education.The fourth part has described the solving measures to the problems of girls' basic education. This part has analyzed the formation of background and the effect of the adopted administrative measures and proposed policy interventions by summarizing what the federal government of Nigeria has already put into practice.The fifth part is the conclusion. Through the research on the problems of girls' basic education in Nigeria, the thesis has put forward the advised factors of the relevant laws and policies, the necessary preferential implement policies and the supporting social networks for solving the problems of girls'basic education in the undeveloped western area of China.
