Foucault describes in his Discipline and Punishment how the modern authority is different from the traditional. He contends that modern authority is not primarily exerted in a top-down way through powerful features, but permeates our daily life in a sporadic, empirical, covert, continuous and productive way. Capillary-like and dispersed, it firmly monitors and ties to our body. At present, with the increasing attention on body theories, researches on physical discipline in social and cultural areas are also on the rise. However, in the field of education, especially in higher education management, this subject is not that much dealt with. The author has been involved in the daily management of a college, working to maintain the order of normal teaching, management and education, and seriously implementing various rules and regulations of the college. Compared to primary and secondary school students, college students are more sensitive and aware of individual rights and personal space. Meanwhile, they have perception and reaction capabilities of body control. Accordingly, the university's disciplinary power also has to be disguised more secretively and neutrally. Under such working conditions, the author sees a lot of confrontations and conflicts between the college authority and students, and between teachers and students, caused by the discipline and the teaching. Then based on students' and universities'own characteristics, how should physical disciplines be carried out in universities? How do they affect students? What is students'daily life in university like? And how do we look at these conflicts concerning the modern higher education?Considering these questions and setting students'body as a starting point, this paper first studies the mechanisms and means of physical disciplines in students'daily life in the college field, observing how the disciplines help shape students'behaviors; then it reveals their resistance on the discipline and analyzes its inevitability and technical feasibility; it also describes the instrumental value of physical discipline and the conflicts caused by it; finally, it gives a dialectic discussion of the relationship between physical discipline and freedom, based on which ideas of dealing with the conflicts are proposed. This paper mainly applies methods of literature analysis and qualitative research. Going deep into the daily college life, it observes the behavior of teachers and students, entirely explores in natural contexts the social phenomena, using a variety of data collection methods, and obtains an interpretative understanding of the actions and meaning construction through the interaction with the object of the study. The information are analyzed inductively and conclusions are drawn after the obtaining of a wealth of information through field observation and experience, interviews, QQ anonymous chat and other forms of social surveys.By the studying of all kinds of disciplines in the school field, especially on campus daily life, this paper tries to search and reveal in the neutral fragments of life how microscopic power regulates our body; it also discusses whether the physical discipline has realized their primary expectations. What is more, it evaluates the value and purpose of the discipline and the conflicts, thus considering corresponding constructive ideas. The paper presents that the physical discipline in the college field has its specific characteristics in the context of modern higher education and the conflicts caused are the result of the internal contradictions of the discipline's dual purpose and the inversion of the goal in education practice. Based on this understanding, it is an extreme and impracticable idea that the denial and abandon of physical discipline is a way of pursuing human's overall freedom and liberation. Rather, it is more practicable to remove the superstition of and abuse on the rational instruments and return to the education purpose. The author hopes this paper may provide us with a new perspective on the comprehensive understanding of modern physical discipline in the college field and also hopes to offer reference for the higher education practice in the modern context.
