Democracy between teachers and students and freedom of students are our ideal. Nowadays, there exists the trend of abstraction and romantic idealism in the study of education theory on this problem. We must cautiously analyze and rationally handle the authority of teachers in process of education, which contributes to gradually realize real and actual democracy.This paper can be divided into four parts. The first part discusses what is the authority of teachers. The second treats whether teaches should own definite authority. The third part points out the problems exiting in the practice about the authority of teachers and analyze the causes of them. The last part discusses how to build rational authority of teachers.The main viewpoints of this thesis are as following:1 .On the basis of distinguishing between authority and power, the authority of teachers is defined convincing strength that teachers own. According to the different manifestation mode and operation mechanism in practice of education, the authority of teachers is divided the authority teachers possess as administrators and the authority teachers have as guides for learning of students.2.1n terms of the criticism of radical democracy personage to the authority of teachers , the thesis points out it is inevitable for teachers' authority to exit because it has objective condition for existence; It is also necessary for definite authority of teacher ,which means teachers that own authority are able to better play the roles of administrator and guides; The authority of teachers and the freedom of students don't conflict, but closely relate with each other. The authority of teachers have as administrators can ensure the great majority of students' real freedom, and the authority teachers own as guides would strength the power with which students achieve freedom. The key to handle the authority of teachers is to distinguish between the reasonable authority of teachers and authoritarianism of teachers.3.Nowadays, there are some problems in the practice of education, which refers to the weakening of the actual authority of teachers and abundance of authoritarianism of teachers. From the aspects of society, education itself and teachers, etc. we can deduce the causes of them.4.To solve the problems about the authority of teachers, it's critical to build new rational authority of teachers accordant with the development of society. The creationof rational authority is a systemic project, in which rationalize the power of teachers, transit teachers' roles, promote their quality are important.
