In recent years, more and more middle school teachers begin to pay close attention to task-based teaching method. Task-based teaching approach emphasizes that the language teaching process should be truthful, and it could make the students learn and use language through the purposeful tasks. Through the class activities, the students and the teacher together complete the teaching tasks. The basic of Task-based teaching approach is a process of"learning by doing", in which the students engage in naturalistic learning through experiencing and exploring language. At the same time, the New Curriculum Standards put forward the high requirements for teachers. In order to adapt to the demands of New Curriculum Standards, teachers should change their teaching concept and teaching method.Now our country is driving a new round of curriculum reform in education, which aims at improving the students'reading competence. The New English Curriculum Standard strongly approves the use of Task-Based Language Teaching, and the aim of this teaching approach is to improve the students'reading competence by the activities of doing, thinking, communicating and cooperating. Task-based teaching approach provides language environment, and it can improve the learners'reading competence through using the target language to communicate. It focuses on both the language learning and the learning procedure. So Task–based Language Teaching is a good way, which could improve the students'reading abilities.This paper discussed from the theoretical level about how TBLT could be effectively applied to English reading teaching practice in middle school. On the basis of experiment, this paper shows that this kind of teaching approach can evoke the students'enthusiasm and improve their reading abilities. Furthermore, the students'comprehensive competence of using language can be improved.The author did an experiment in Yanjin No. 1 middle school in 2010, with two contrast classes by separately using TBLT and the traditional teaching method, and the result shows that TBLT has more advantage than the traditional one. The procedure of completing the tasks stimulates the students'interest in English, and strengthens the students'motivation of communicating in English. The questionnaire shows most of the students think that the application of TBLT in class makes the reading class easier. The designed tasks are close to the real life, which can enhance the communication and cooperation of the students. And each task contains the reading skills, which changes the students'traditional reading style and it virtually improves the students'reading competence. This experiment demonstrates that TBLT, compared with the traditional one, is more effective in promoting the students'proficiency of language abilities.
