With the development of globalization, English teaching plays a more and more important role in the whole educational program. In all levels of English teaching, reading, as an important means of language input and one of the basic language skills, should be taken as a priority. Therefore, it is very important for students to master some reading strategies in the process of reading activity. However, the traditional course of English reading in senior middle schools mainly focuses on grammar teaching and detailed explanations of specific sentences. This model proved unable to effectively improve students'reading ability. In the practical English teaching, teachers should make use of online newspaper to organize and guide students'newspaper reading activity in order to improve their reading ability. To make full use of newspaper resource and gain satisfactory results, a careful design of the classroom teaching is of vital importance. From September to November, 2010, we 24 postgraduates carried out our teaching practice in Suzhou No.1 Middle School, Middle School Affiliated to Suzhou University and Suzhou Tianjiabing Experimental School. During the few months, the author of this thesis conducted a survey of English reading teaching in middle schools. Of the 30 persons surveyed, six of them are teachers of the Middle School Affiliated to Suzhou University. The thesis first makes a brief introduction to relevant theories, such as Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Affective Filter Hypothesis. Then the author makes an analysis of the current situation of English reading teaching and the advantages of newspaper reading. In terms of classroom teaching design, the author suggests a combination of classroom newspaper reading model and after-class autonomous newspaper reading model, which is an application of the task-based method. Classroom newspaper reading model aims at training students'cognitive strategy in newspaper reading, which is a guarantee of'quality'. The after-class autonomous newspaper reading model is mainly to develop the students'meta-cognitive strategy in newspaper reading, which is a guarantee of"quantity".Finally, the author points out some implications of the research and concludes with some suggestions for the course of English reading in middle schools.
