The contradiction between requirements of diversity talents and China' current "Thousands School One Face" which means homogeneity education is become more and more obvious. For better promote quality educational reform, educational administrator map out the process of reform. Compulsory and high school started to teach new courses successively in 2005 and 2007. The characteristic school represents the educational tendency under the new situation. Under such time context, it is necessary to study the existing accomplishment which characteristic school had achieved to explore the scientific and reasonable way for characteristic school.This paper defines "characteristic school" first. Characteristic school is different from the key school and elite schools. It should stand on the economic and social development; follow the rules of educational development, combined with the school tradition and operation practice, in order to find out a new mode for characteristic school, which can integrate pre-existing features with newly practices. Its unique training style would lead it to success both in school itself and education. This article will analyze the history of characteristic school both at home and abroad, and enlighten readers with two representative characteristic schools.This paper discuss three different elements:the main body layer, the core layer and the security layer of constructing characteristic school. The main body layer includes school principal, teachers and students. Taking people oriented as the teaching principle, teacher should care each student's special characteristics and then determine the talents training target, and school will construct the distinctive school-based curriculum system which will concern the sustainability and advancement of talents training targets. The core part for characteristic school is to evaluate students in a proper way. The unique school culture should be a spectacular stage to show not only its material culture and environment, but also its institutional culture and school spirit. Within those cultures, school spirit is the soul of school culture. The construction of characteristic school is a long-term systematic project, and need all kinds of help from each quarters of society. First, this new model needs the support from mainstream culture in politics, economics, and culture. Second, school should take the educational rules into consideration as the medium vision. Third, the microcosmic vision is the self-search which means school should have characteristics to distinguish itself. The construction of characteristic school also needs to establish corresponding evaluation system. Evaluation system will assess the construction process and intermittent achievements, and promote the sustainable development of the characteristic construction.The paper shows a way and method for construction of characteristic school theoretically. The first step is to evaluate the existing school culture, and then clear the school conception and common value orientation, mainly through the enhanced the principal leadership, excellent management team, and the cultivation of professional teachers. Shaping characteristics in students is also a quite important part in nurturing characteristics school culture. All in all, to promote the characteristics of school culture is to promote cultural school itself.
