With the trends of social thought toward humanism develop recent years, the legitimate status and function of punishment are questioned. What is more, as various punishment phenomena of abuse and misuse in school education exist, a large scale of condemning and campaign are brought out through out the society facing to various unreasonable punishment phenomena, the educational significance of punishment are completely denied, ignoring the research and application of punishment. So, in today's school education, does punishment exactly have a role? Is it necessary to keep punishment? Punishment is a kind of commonly used education method to correct bad behavior and an essential part in education. Educators should strengthen to punishment research so as to promote the scientization of its application and to correct students'bad behaviors effectively.Based on the understanding of punishment, this article attempts to establish the positive significance of punishment by demonstrating the function of punishment to education. And it discusses the reason of unreasonable punishment existence by analyzing the problems caused by unreasonable punishment phenomena in school education as well as the lack and lag of law in field of punishment. Also it provides possible strategies to work out how to employ punishment reasonably and legitimately in school education in aspects of school and teachers, so as to uttermost restrain the negative functions of dangerous measure and to exert the positive functions into full pay.
