National University is one of the earliest private universities in modern China, whose unique foundation history and management mode has an important influence in the history of Chinese education and revolution. The notable Hu Shi fostered a deep bond with National University during his studying and working in it.This paper tries to reproduce the original outlook of the National University, and meanwhile, emphasizes the research on relationship between Hu Shi and National University. Based on the research, the paper reveals the impact National University had on Hu Shi and his liberal in the early period; On the other hand, this paper also explores the role that Hu Shi played in changing National University when he was the president of the university.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the early origin of Hu Shi and National University. It is its unique attraction that appeals Hu Shi to apply for the entrance exam. The democratic management mode edifies his democracy sense, thus gradually forms his sense of participation. The relationship is the focus of the research throughout the whole paper. The second and the third chapter mainly focus on the efforts that the president Hu Shi made to develop open campus affairs and good study style. He participated in council restructuring, department adjustment, campus expansion and school construction. Hu Shi developed free concept, cultivated the school democratic atmosphere and carried out the idea of "non-interference". Therefore, National University reached its developing peak. However, due to the ideas of individual freedom, Hu Shi offended the Kuomintang authority, which prevented the university accreditation. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the efforts that Hu Shi made to extricate and revive National University after his resign, as well as the remembrance of his old age.The revolution and democracy tradition of National University is one of the important causes of Hu Shi's liberal thoughts, while the development of National University in the1930s is closely related to Hu Shi's liberal education idea. The accreditation was affected by Hu Shi"s liberal speech, whose essence is the contradiction between Hu Shi's liberalism and the Kuomintang's "cultural control" in the1930s.
