This study has made a profound study and introspection on the organization of alumni association in developing local university. The following questions should be mainly considered: How are the alumni associations of local universities formed? What roles are they playing? How to play their roles? What phenomena are there among them? Why these phenomena are there? How to further tap the potential of these organizations? Based on the large amounts of data collected from interviews, documentation and office observations, this thesis analyzed all the above questions. The whole thesis was divided into seven chapters. On the bases of putting forward questions from phenomena, determining the topics and research methods, interpreting the literature and the meaning of this study, this text combed out the history of S university alumni association, revealed its nature, objective, structure, operation mechanism and function, analyzed the legitimacy, convergence, difference and difficulties of the alumni associations of local universities, and proposed some solutions finally. The conclusions of this study could be summarized as following:(1) In the process of social transformation, the rapid development of higher education and S university develops itself, S university formed gradually to be a kind of social organization through three periods including lack, preparation and establishment.(2) S university alumni association has no institutional legitimacy. It has transformed its aims from the alma mater only to service for alumni, universities and social aspects all. Its structure and operation mechanism are imperfect. The original goal of thriving alma mater on alumni's power is not achieved. The actual functions are weak while there are some potential roles of personnel management buffer and negative effects.(3) The study based on analyzing S university and other local universities found that: most of alumni associations of local Universities are lack of legitimacy. Institutional environment leads the alumni associations of local universities to show a great deal of convergence in internal nature, objectives, structure, operation mechanisms and functions. These alumni associations are same at lack of legitimacy and instability, regional and professional characteristics, and weak sense of belonging. At the same time, the internal technological environment in pursuit of efficiency is conflict with the external institutional environment which constraints legitimacy, this causes obvious differences between the alumni associations of local universities and leading universities.(4) In order to further tap the potential of local university alumni associations, their internal operations and organizational structure need to be unbundled to carry out some innovative works under macro guidance. There are some solutions such as applying timely for registration to the civil affairs departments, developing the emotional connection based on academic affiliation, establishing a social network regarded its alma mater as center, increasing the allocation of personnel, expanding channels of materials, consolidating the basic work, and so on.
