Contemporary Wa Male Mate Research

China's rural economic system reform led to the population mobility and migration of the rural area and the phenomena of flow and removal of rural female caught most people's eyes. The previous research has shown that the permanent migration of rural female is belonging to marriage migration. Rural women's migration of marriage met the needs of men in ingoing places but it caused the male marriage difficulties in outgoing places. This paper studies the problems faced by the Wa male who in the circumstances of more males than females after a large amount of female's marriage migration in two Wa villages in the China-Myanmar border and got deep research into their marriage behavior. Essentially, the choice of mating is based on the behavior of attraction to each other and made choices between the male and female. But under the influence and limitation of social economic and cultural factors, the choice of mating beyond human biological instinct and become a kind of very complex cultural phenomenon. This paper chooses two Wa villages to research which purpose is to use multi-sites ethnography and from the visual angle of mating choices to reveals the changes of the Wa society under the background of population mobility and migration.The writing materials of this paper are collected by the method of depth interview of anthropology fieldwork, in the process of essay writing I used the theory of "marriage squeeze" to analyze the collected materials. The first step of forming marriage relationship is mating, which is also the most important step. This paper discussed the change of behavior which Wa male how to choose spouse from the standard and range of spouse selection. Among them, the range of spouse selection further divided into the changes of gap in age between couples on the level of time, the changes intermarriage circle on the level of space and breakthrough of taboo of namesake marriage on the level of social aspects in order to reflect the condition of Wa male spouse selection overall. Any problem of marriage can find the factors from the both aspects of male and female, the marriage squeeze of male stem mainly from the female's marriage migration of Wa women, the author discussed the female' s marriage migration after analyzed the dilemma of the spouse selection of Wa male, on the basis of in-depth study the author proposed that the marriage pattern of Wa people has changed into the pattern which defined as "young female married to old male", the author also thought that the way of Wa female's migration decided the difference of age at first marriage. The marriage patterns' change of the widened couple's marriageable age is bound to involve other aspects of the Wa social change. But the lack of long-term participant observation study and relevant information, and the limitation of the author's personal capability, this change still unclear and remains to be further explored.
