With the rapid development of economy in China, the progress of urbanization has given rise to the emergence of urban agglomeration. In such conditions, the traditional mid-and-short distance inter-city transportation leading by highway passenger transportation cannot effectively meet the needs of residents travel. The insufficient capacity of highway passenger transportation in general has given rise to the Regional rail transit. Along with the implementation of the policies such as Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta, the "Eleventh Five-year" Plan on Comprehensive Transportation of Guangdong Province, and so on, increased investment in the infrastructure facilities made by the state and the rapid construction of Regional rail transit, the highway passenger transportation in Guangzhou is faced with unprecedented challenges. Therefore, it's very significant for the future development of highway passenger transportation to analyze the impacts of Regional rail transit on highway passenger transportation in Guangzhou based on the competition between Regional rail transit and highway passenger transportation and draft corresponding countermeasures.In this paper, the author firstly has analyzed the current situation of highway passenger transportation in Guangzhou by learning about the development outline and capacity of Regional rail transit in the Pearl River Delta. Then, the author has roughly analyzed the impacts of Regional rail transit by summarizing the major factors affecting people's choice of traffic and the evaluation of competitiveness between highway passenger transportation and Regional rail transit, and deeply analyzed the challenges faced by the highway passenger transportation in combination with the impacts on the passenger quantity of highway passenger transportation caused by the newly-introduced Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Mass Rapid Transit. Finally, the author has brought forward a few suggestions on the reforms and developments for highway passenger transportation in Guangzhou in the future based on the impacts of Regional rail transit on highway passenger transportation.
