With the development of scientific technology and the booming of the knowledge-based economy, great changes are taking place in the distribution of resources, technology as well as talents. The convergence of these resources in the most creative zones has become the main trend and against this background, industry cluster is playing a more and more critical role in regional economic development. The high-tech industry which is branded with high-profitability, high-permeability, high-relevance and high-strategy has mounted as the most powerful driving engine for the whole economy.High-technology and its industrialized level is now regarded as one of the most important reference when rating a region's or nation's comprehensive strength. To promote the industrialization and commercialization, throughout the world it is widely employed to set up high-tech industrial development zone.Chengdu plays a very crucial role in the development of western China. As the capital of Sichuan Province, it is the regional economic center of western China. Chengdu high-tech industry development zone is thus one of the first zones approved by the central government. The past twenty-years have witnessed profound enhancement of its organic strength and increase in GDP. Its role as the powerhouse of the whole region is becoming more and more important.The article takes Chengdu high-tech industry development zone as the researching object and combines the researching methods of literature review, comparative analysis and quantitative-qualitative analysis. The first chapter introduces the definition of industry cluster, high-tech industry etc. It also gives a thorough review of the classic theories on industry cluster, illustrates its developing modes, driving force and competitiveness and later summarizes the overall performance of the Chengdu high-tech industry development zone.
