Because of technology improvement and economy development, market competition becomes fiercer all over the world. In this highly competitive commercial world, enterprises call for high requirement for research and development management. Since establishment in 1928, as the leader of communication industry Motorola has gone through many ups and downs. Why it can survive in this commercial jungle? Its advanced R&D management mode has been the key factor of its success.This thesis first outlines main theories and methodologies in R&D management, summarizes the history and characteristics of R&D management theories. Then it analyses development of R&D management in Chinese domestic companies and research institution. To research Motorola's R&D management mode deeply, it gives an overview of its history and culture and the development of Chengdu Design Center. Then Motorola's R&D management mode is analyzed from several aspects. For team management, it introduces its highly self-managed team, employee trainings and kinds of team building activities. Take its R&D management process M-Gates for example, it introduces Motorola's R&D management running mechanism. For quality management, it presents well-known 6-Sigma's principle and its practical usage in R&D daily work. It gives instance in communication management, risk management, schedule management and performance assessment in Chengdu Design Center. Moreover, it introduces Motorola's IT supporting platform and new exploration of agile development.Based on these management practices, it summaries core characteristics and good points of Motorola R&D management mode. Also it points out some shortcomings and gives out some recommendations for improvement.Last but not least, there are some good references for China's enterprises to learn from Motorola R&D management mode. This thesis gives out several constructive suggestions to our companies in R&D management. Also it discusses some ideaistic innovations for Chinese companies to improve R&D management mode. We can learn from others advantages and then catch up with them. Hope these proposals can help our companies to get our own competitiveness and to earn our market share in 21st century.
