| New Town is a new direction for the urbanization of metropolis. At present, domestic researches on New Town are confined to the pattern of development and construction. Few studies are focused on the functionality of New Town as a city. With New Town's internal development need and external environment changes, it is a new topic that how to change the development mode of New Town from emphasizing on expansion and construction pattern to focusing on function improvement and content development. Therefore, to grasp the dynamics of New Town research and to discuss New Town function in depth is beneficial to solving some key issues in current New Town development. It brings new requirements for Songjiang Town as its status keeps changing. Songjiang New Town, starting up earliest with highest level and currently the largest and most populous new town in Shanghai, will face the dramatic change in city function and structure. It is essential for future Songjiang development to seize the opportunity of Yangtze River Delta integration and Shanghai city development from regional development potential, neighboring space layout and internal environment feature. Based on the object law of city development and combined with new town feature, the paper intends to utilize scientific method to analyze and grasp the strategy and direction of Songjiang New Town function optimization, making the interpretation of city function and actual strategic implementation more practical. The paper's research and its achievement will provide instructive idea for Songjiang New Town function improvement and guide Songjiang New Town healthy development, also acting as a reference for similar new town in China.The paper takes Songjiang New Town function optimization and improvement as its main research object, and focusing on this topic the paper gives the following studies and conclusions. Firstly, the paper summarizes related domestic and international theoretic and practical research and provides the theoretic foundation for the research of Songjiang New Town function optimization and improvement. Secondly, through the analysis of current Songjiang New Town situation, the paper explains the reality and contradiction of new town function development and determine existing problems and the reason behind it; through the internal and external analysis of Songjiang New Town function, the paper lays a potential foundation for further research; based on that, the paper also deals with how to master the potential and advantage of Songjiang New Town function optimization, improvement and constraints in order to select a most appropriate strategic mode.
