Dimethyl fumarate is an antifungal preservative with low toxicity, high efficiency and good stability and it can be used in acidic or neutral conditions to avoid deterioration of forage, food and fruits and can inhibit a variety of fungi in footwear and leather funiture. Dimethyl fumarate with extensive development prospects is used successfully to treat psoriasis. The fluid phase equilibria, volumetric, viscosity properties and the corresponding models for the synthesis of dimethyl fumarate were researched in this paper, which is essential to serve for the chemical engineering designs and purification process and have certain scientific theory significance and engineering applied prospect. The research on phase state, density and volumetric properties, viscosity and transport properties for solution is very important for the chemical engineering designs, reaction process, solution theory and molecular thermodynamics, and there are quite a few researches on solubility of fumaric acid and dimethyl fumarate in organic solvents, density and viscosity. Using the laser monitoring observation technique, the solubilities of fumaric acid in methanol+water and the solubilities of dimethyl fumarate in methanol+water, methanol, ethanol,1-propanol,2-propanol,1,2-propanediol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide have been determined experimentally. The experimental data are correlated with the modified Apelblat and λh equations, and the constants of equations were obtained. According to Scatchard-Hildebrand theory, the results of experiment were discussed. The densities and viscosities of methanol+water, dimethyl fumarate+methanol, dimethyl fumarate+ethanol, dimethyl fumarate+1-propanol, dimethyl fumarate+2-propanol, and dimethyl fumarate+1,2-propanediol have been measured from298.15K to333.15K. The experimental data are correlated with the VTF equation and the constants of equation were obtained. From the measurements, the excess molar volumes, apparent molar volumes, and excess viscosities are calculated. The study of solubility, density, viscosity and appropriate model enriches the basic research of chemical engineering and molecular thermodynamic, and provides basic data for industrial production and farther research to dimethyl fumarate.
