With the rapid development of the technology of cold roll forming, cold formed steel havebeen gradually accepted by users, and have been widely applied in many fields, such as thevehicle industries, construction industries and power-transmission towers. Although cold rollforming technology has been present nearly hundred years, and many researchers devoted tothe theory and technology of cold roll forming, and also achieved good results. Because coldroll forming process is very complicated, which involves the geometric nonlinearity, thematerial nonlinearity and the boundary nonlinearity, so the design and trial-manufacture of theproducts mainly depend on engineers’ experience and on “trial and error” method? So the cycletime of the design and trial-manufacture is very long and the rate of finished products is low. Itleads to a serious trial failed, resulting in a large waste of human work and financial resources. In recent years, numerical simulation technology has brought a revolution to theengineering, along with the numerical simulation technology and the rapid development ofcomputer technology. At present, the finite element analysis has become a powerful method tothe engineering design and prediction. Although the numerical calculation is approximate, ithas very important significance for engineering application. The initial design evaluation andoptimization can be carried out after the roll forming process is simulated. The method shortensthe cycle of product design and reduces production cost effectively. In this paper, the basic theory of cold roll forming, forming technique and finite elementnumerical simulation technology are briefly introduced. The fourth chapter introducescommon defects of cold roll forming, such as longitudinal bending and springback of openingsection steel in cold roll forming, the torsion of non-symmetry section steel. The roll formingprocess of the channel steel and Z-section steel are simulated and analyzed by using thegeneral finite element analysis software, and the methods of reducing longitudinal bending, torsion and springback were found. The fifth chapter mainly designs roll passes of Z-sectionsteel and simulates roll forming process with finite element method. The passes design ofZ-section steel mainly includes computing blank size and selecting bending angle and so on.Then, two design schemes are analyzed using finite element analysis software, and find betterone. Finally, comparing finite element simulation results of the channel with the experimentalresults, it shows that the finite element simulation of roll forming is feasibility.
