Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is the principal acid of fruit rinds of Garcinia. Studiesindicated that HCA suppress the fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, food intake andinduced weight loss. HCA has been widely used in functional foods. Natural productsof functional foods are favored by consumers because of its safety and low toxicity.Bat a lot of prohibited chemical substances often are added to these types of productsby many illegal operators to get the more benefits, and the health of consumers isdamaged. In this paper, High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)method wasestablished for the analysis of hydroxycitric acid and the simultaneous determinationof illegally added rimonabant and sibutramine in functional food. After ultrasonicextraction of the sample, HCA was analyzed at210nm wave length using99%phosphoric acid (0.1%)-1%methanol as the mobile phase; Rimonabant andsibutramine were detected at223nm wave length using100%methanol as the mobilephase. Experimental results showed that, good liner range between0.001~1.0mg/mLwith an average spiked recovery of90.49%~103.90%can be obtained for HCA; Forrimonabant and sibutramine, a liner range was between0.01~20μ g/mL, and thelimit of detection (LOD) was1ng/mL and3ng/mL, respectively. The analysis ofHCA and detection of rimonabant and sibutramine was simply operated with highanalysis speed and high accuracy which was proved to be practical for the qualitymonitoring of functional foods.
