With the modernization of society, noncircular section part has been widely used inautomobile, aviation, astronavigation industries and etc. Turning is an effective way ofmachining, but the traditional lathe couldn’t machine noncircular parts. For this manufacturepurpose, a new platform has been designed in this paper, and the key technologies werestudied.Firstly, the feature of the noncircular part’s shape and the process of shaping it areanalyzed. The platform of machining noncircular parts can be established by adding afast-reciprocating-feeding structure to the system of lathe’s planker locating and of chief axisrotating. The motion principle of the feeding tool, reciprocating in coordination with themotion of chief axis, is the key point, which is complicated and studied specifically.A fast-reciprocating-feeding tool structure is designed. Using voice coil linear actuatordriving tool directly, the rotary-to-linear conversion mechanism, which can bring delay anderror in, is bypassed. A higher control precision and motion frequency is thus achieved.The tool’s servo motion control is realized. The tool’s position is detected by rastersensor. Sampling and complex algorithm are performed by digital signal processor withample computation power.The platform of machining noncircular parts is established. The reciprocating-feedingtool system is installed on the lathe’s planker. Each motor on the platform is equipped with anamplifier, and several axes can move correspondingly by using multi-axis motion controller.At last, the experiments are performed on the platform. One is simulating machiningeclipse when the chief axis doesn’t load any material. The simulation results are analyzed.The other one is machining the real material and the turning error curve is obtained. Theexperiment results prove the effectiveness of our design.
