Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) has been widely usedin mold manufacturing, hard to cut materials machining and precisionmachining, etc. The technological level of most domestic WEDM-CNCsystems still stagnates at the early stage of CNC systems for a long time,which apparently can’t satisfy the requirements of a modern CNC systemon graphic user interfaces (GUI) and network technologies. Thus there is astrong need to develop a low-cost open CNC system for WEDM.This thesis proposed a prototype of an embedded WEDM-CNCsystem based on the EMC2software platform and the network distribution.By porting the WEDM-CNC software which based on PC and EMC2tothe ARM architecture,and using the network technology, a new openCNC system for WEDM was designed.A Cortex-A9development board (Pandaboard) was used as the hostcomputer of the CNC system, which is in charge of the user interface, NCcode interpretation and interpolation. As the slave unit of the system, theSTM32MCU, on the one hand, carried out the I/O control, the step motorscontrol and the gap state monitoring,etc, on the other hand, realized thedata communication with the host computer through the Ethernet.Considering the need of porting the WEDM-CNC software from thePC to the ARM architecture, an Ethernet communication module, whosefunction is to establish the communication between the host and the slaveby the TCP/IP protocol, was integrated to the EMC2software. The GUI ofthe remote control system was achieved by using the neural messagelanguage (NML) of EMC2.On the slave unit, the reverse motion was triggered when a shortcircuit is detected by measuring the gap voltage. Finally, the prototype of the embedded WEDM-CNC system based onEMC2and Ethernet Distributed technology was developed, and was testedon the DK7725g WEDM machine tool.
