In order to satisfy the needs of customers, a new CNC machine tool development by used of existing CNC machine tools by Machine tool manufacturers will become tendency of enterprise’s development in the future. As a knowledge-based CNC machine tool development methodology, Case-based configuration technologies for CNC machine tools makes full use of the existing knowledge of CNC machine tools, develops rapidly new CNC machine tools, shortens the product design life cycle, and Reduces development costs, so it has gained more and more attentions by enterprise.This article takes College Doctoral Special Research Fund Program (2006014501) and "Research on collaborative design of CNC machine tools and virtual prototyping in network environment" as Subject background. The method of customer order-oriented configuration based on knowledge and CNC machine tool system is proposed in this paper against the development properties of new models. Combine with HTC series CNC lathe of Shenyang Machine Tool Automotive Equipment co., LTD, a production configuration system is developed, and proved feasibility of configuration method based on case.The structure of this paper is as follow:(1) The background of case-based CNC configuration technology is presented. In order to improve the traditional technology’s flaw, the contents are introduced. At last, the general thesis structure is put forward, as well as the purpose and the significance.(2) The knowledge based CNC machine tool configuration technology is researched systematically. Firstly, the reuse technology in CNC machine tool development is introduced. Secondly, the knowledge-based product configuration is presented, mainly including generic product structure based configuration and case based configuration, which has also been madden a specified comparison, and against the features of CNC machine tool, it brings out the case-based configuration method.(3) The CNC machine tool-case is specified researched. First of all, the CNC machine tool configuration cases are designed, including the contents of case and the representation of case model. What’s more, the CNC machine tool configuration method based on case is brought forth. The modification and searches as well as revision for the case-based are researched. In the end, an example is analyzed.(4) The process of knowledge-base CNC machine tool configuration is studied, including the requirement obtain from customers and characteristic mapping. Besides, the model of CNC machine tool configuration and the process of CNC machine tool configuration based on case are designed to direction the CNC machine tool configuration.(5) The case-based CNC machine tool configuration system is designed and developed on theory above-mentioned. Firstly the system frame, including system development platform, system structure and function module, is introduced. And then the main function modules:customer’s need acquirement module, CNC machine tool configuration case module, case-based configuration module are discussed separately. Finally the system operation case is introduced.
