With the influence of the state economic and energy security and the global climatechange, the issue of energy saving and emission reduction has been the focus of commonconcern among the global academia and national governments. In recent years, the Chinesegovernment erects the scientific concept of development and takes "building an economicsociety and environment friendly society" as the basic national policy. Under the backgroundof global climate warming, extreme weather events continue to increase in frequency, intensity. However we could take efforts to abate climate change by reducing greenhousegases. It is vital to reduce discharge of the carbon dioxide for ensuring sustainabledevelopment of society.Carbon footprint is a popular index to quantify the CO2emissions. This paper conducts abasic overview of carbon footprint and calculate the energy consumption-related carbonfootprint based on the historical data obtained from Jilin Province Statistical Yearbook, usingIPCC method. Besides, a prediction of CO2emissions under different emission-reducingscenarios is made. The CO2emission formula is also decomposed to analyze the factors(energy structure, energy intensity, energy efficiency, GDP per capita and industries structure)that contributes to the carbon footprint. A comprehensive analysis is undertaken to examinethe effects of fore mentioned factors on CO2emission by taking the example of coal, petroleum and natural gas. Finally, some current problems confronted and measuresresponding to those factors are mentioned with an aim of decreasing carbon footprint. It isvital to do research on energy consumption for providing technical support.Under the strategy prior to the development of heavy industry, Jilin province, as thenortheast old industrial base, particularly accelerates the economic growth. Because ofhistorical reasons, there is still a big gap in outdated equipment, backward technology, energyconsumption.
