A Study On People’s Behavior And Plant’s Application In Some Urban Leisure Green Spaces Of Beijing

Urban leisure green space is not only a part of the urban landscape, a part of the urban ecological system, but also a part of people’s lives. It offers spaces built by materials especially plants for people’s leisure activities. At the same time, it helps people to relieve kinds of pressures from the rush of city life with its nature and green appearance.To design urban leisure green spaces playing the role much better, which they are supposed to play in city environment and city lives, this paper took out an investigation in10parks and a detailed survey of8spases in Dongwangzhang Park and19spaces in Yandadu Relics Park to see what kinds of people are using urban green leisure spaces, what kinds of activities they are doing, what kinds of spaces they need and how to use materials, especially the ornamental plants to build the spaces.Above all, the thesis found that the main use of leisure green spaces are the elderly, combination of adult and children, middle-aged, young couples, children via analysing survey data. Their main activities are entertainment, social life, sports, rest, babysitting and just walk through. It’s easy to find out the functional requirements of these activities: a space of right size and facilities. Since the elderly and children are main users, it’s also necessary to take out some protective measures to ensure their safety when using the space.Based on the results of the survey, the thesis analysis psychological needs of different activities combined with relevant theories of environmental psychology. People always want to do activity in a comfortable environment, but different activities need different kinds of comfort. Collective activities in large spaces, such as dance, people care more about the visual and auditory confort. Activities in small spaces, such as chess and talk, people care about most is the vision and touch confort. Activities of entertainment and physical exercise usually do’t need security and privacy. Rest and babysitting need security to some extent.Social life requires security and privacy the most in the6types of activities.On the basis of all above montioned, the thesis finally discussed how to use plants to build leisure spaces. How to arrange spaces in a park from a much higer point of view was talked about first. People’s functional and psychological needs should also be considered in this step, which were function combination and map recognition. Then from how to build paces with plants the thesis probed into how to making pravacy and security with plants. Reasonable Suggestions about how to use ornamantal plants to make comfortable spaces were also put forward, from the aspacts of vision, hearing, smell, touch, microclimate and balance of different feelings.After the investigation and research, the thesis found out people’s needs in leisure green spaces and finally put forward some Suggestions about the design of urban leisure green spaces.
