The style debate of Germany in the19th century marks the rise of Germanic architectural theory. Because of influence by plentiful social concept and theory at that time, Germanic architectural theory drew into abundant philosophy and history theory. Thus the style debate expanded the boundary of the architecture, covered lots of social and culture at that time. In allusion to the transcendental form of neoclassicism, Heinrich Hiibsch advocated the architecture should return to the inherent problem of materials and construction. Connecting with the practical situation, then he put forward the Rundbogenstil, which caused the style debate for more than20years. On the basis of Hubsch’s theory, Karl Botticher put forward the "core-form" and "art-form" to solve the contradiction of ontology and representation in the building. Through the style debate, the German formed a rough framework of the style theory, and simultaneously urged the germination and blossom of the German Tectonic idea.At the time of this argument which took place in Germany about "what style should we building" is a very important historical events. To the modern architectural development, it also has a profound impact, but this has been ignored by architectural scholars of our country. This paper introduces the origin, development and influence of the historical events by taking the debate under the historical background. Furthermore, the paper has made a corresponding supplementary for the origin of the German tectonics. This has not only a certain historical value, but also some practical significance to the contemporary practice of architecture in China.
