The accident of the crawler crane boom backward tipping will be happened easily while the crawler crane unloads suddenly or the hanger falls off abruptly, because of the elastic behavior of the luffer system and the complete machine. Therefore, the crawler crane backward tipping behavior must be thought for the stability of the complete machine and the design of backstop. And with the devolopement of large-tonnage crawler crane, the traditional static design of crane exposed its shortage in the field of crane dynamics. Based of that, research on the dynamic behavior of large-tonnage crawler crane and the dynamic simulation of the crawler crane boom backward tipping to design and optimize the backstop for suppressing effectively the vibration of the crawler crane boom backward tipping has important practical significance.Applying the software ADAMS for dynamic simulation and Pro/E for three-dimensional design creates the mechanical system of virtual prototyping model of the 200t crawler crane. The models of the drag bar, the spring backstop, the luffer rope and the crawler in the system are established well by ADAMS/View module. The dynamic simulation of the complete mechanical system is researched at series of work condition, which occurs possibly the crawler crane boom backward tipping as the crawler crane unloads suddenly.The hydraulic system model of the hydraulic cylinder backstop, which in general used on the large-tonnage crawler crane, is established by ADAMS/Hydraulics module. And the joint simulation between the mechanical system and the hydraulic system of the crawler crane virtual prototyping is implemented. The different effect of the spring backstop and hydraulic cylinder backstop for the crawler crane boom backward tipping is analysed and compared.The results of the dynamic simulation shows the former designed spring on the spring backstop can not prevent the crawler crane boom backward tipping as the crawler crane unloads suddenly, and exists great impact. The spring stiffness based on the results is adjusted for improving effectually the effect of backstop and avoiding completely the impact.Compared with the results of simulation of spring backstop and hydraulic cylinder backstop, using of hydraulic cylinder backstop depletes more effectively the vibration and impact of the crawler crane boom backward tipping than the spring backstop.
