Concrete horizontal-hole hollow block is a new wall material, which has manykinds of merits such as dry-laid, leakage prevention, anti-cracking, light weight,heat-preserving, energy conservation, land-saving, environment-protecting and so on.It can solve the problems existed in the traditional block and has a practical usage. The application of the concrete horizontal-hole hollow block is of great importance tothe two-oriented society construction. Our research group has already accomplished experimental studies of thefundamental mechanical behavior of the block masonry and the seismic performanceof the wall. However, the deformation property and structural behavior of wall undervertical load has not been well understood. Based on the previous research outcomes, this paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis for the concrete horizontal-holehollow block masonry. The compression performance of the concrete horizontal-holehollow block walls are investigated by experiments. The main contents of this paperare as follows:(1) On choosing appropriate element type, constitutive relation, failure criterionand so on, the finite element model of the concrete horizontal-hole hollow blockmasonry is built, and the applicability of simulating the block-to-block contactbehaviors by using contact element is studied.(2) Three models of concrete horizontal-hole hollow block masonry in differentstress states are calculated to simulate stress distribution characteristics, compressivestrength, initial crack load, failure load and crack expansion. The influence ofmaterial strength on the compressive strength of the block masonry is researched.(3) Compressive strength tests are conducted on mortar, block and block masonrybefore six concrete horizontal-hole hollow block walls are tested. Experiments of sixconcrete horizontal-hole hollow block walls under axial compression are carried outto research their compressive performance, deformation behavior, ultimate bearingcapacity and weak points. At last, the designing suggestions are supposed.
