On the basis of analyzing the theory of the Geographic Information System for Transportation (GIS-T) and the characteristics of modern transportation networks, a data model is set forward to facilitate the GIS expression and operations on the modern traffic networks, which is based on the complete transportation features-roads and synthetically connective lanes with the same directions, and to offset the deficiency of the traditional data model based on the planar topology of arcs and nodes. Furthermore, the author develops a non-planar data model of GIS-T on the basis of feature-based data model put forward, to make it more suitable for traffic network modeling and analysis, and design the methods of conceptual modeling and logical modeling, which provides the basis for the corresponding data structure and database implementation. It is discussed in detail how to implement feature-based non-planar topology for traffic networks to makes up the deficiency of planar graph based link-node data structure. Two cases show the implementation of non-planar database for traffic network with dynamic segmentation, sequential pointer operation and the object-oriented method.
