Steel structure workshop in our industrial building is becoming more and morecommon, and gradually tend to complicated, large-scale, muti_function change,justlike the steel plant with hybrid structure that consisted of the lower of the frameworkand the upper of the portal type rigid frame. Such structural system havecharacteristics of both the frame structure and the portal type rigid frame: the lowerpart is designed as the framework because there are always equipments,storages,offices etc. and it has simple structure stress;the top is designed as the portaltype rigid frame beacause it is just sharing the roof load regardness of its largespan,on the other hand it is for saving steel products to cut down the cost.At present there is no clear rules about the steel plant with hybrid structure asnoted above in the current national norms,so engineering staff are always only refer tothe current "Steel Design Code" and the existing engineering experience to carry outsuch design that it is hard to control the amount of steel.So engineering staff have tobe faced up with how to understand the structure of this kind and how to make astructural analysis which is cost-efficient as well as reasonable.After consulting a lot of literature, this paper introduces the basics of steel plantdesign and the characteristics, structure, structural arrangement and design flow ofsteel portal frame,multi-storey steel frame,home-style rigid frame steel frame,and italso focuses on the analysis and comparison of differences of guidance between "SteelDesign Code" and "Steel portal frame light house technical regulations" so that wecould provide theoretical basis for the design of steel structure workshop.At the same time, this paper takes a home-style rigid frame steel frame exampleas the background, and describes how to have a overall design with the help of thePKPM software on it so that we could proposed a specific design method for this kindof structures. We should treat the two parts differently that the lower part of the steelframe shoud be base on "Steel Design Code" but the top part as well as envelopesshould refer to "steel portal frame light house technical regulations" so that we canconsider the interaction and mutual influence between them by analysing theirthree-dimensional models. The results show that this design approach which is notedin this paper is not only easibility but also cost-efficient so that it is worth to beconsidered as a good reference for the engineering design of the future.
