China is one of the counties which are suffered by the earthquake disasterseriously in the world. Compared to the urban areas, the construction in rural areasuffered severe destruction even in a small earthquake. Earthquake disaster causedgrave threaten to the life and property security of rural residents. Limited by theeconomic conditions and productivity level, the seismic fortification intensity incountryside are commonly lower than that in urban, and its seismic structural measuresis insufficient, other than the application of seismic isolation for structures. With therapidly development of our national economy and the government increasingly attachimportance to rural construction, we should pay more attention to research the seismicisolation technology which is suitable for rural residential buildings.Based on the present theory and practical effect, the combined isolation rubberbearing has become a mature isolation method. Owing to its expensive cost andcomplex construction, this technology is not suited to the rural buildings. In view ofthe characteristics of rural structures and the cost of construction, this paper proposes anew isolation system called steel-asphalt isolation pier. It is simple and cheap,meanwhile it has good isolation performance which is applicable to rural constructions.The basic principles of base isolation are introduced in this paper, then, analyzethe steel-asphalt isolation pier’s structure and the isolation steel simplified calculationmodel. The steel formwork and the production process of the steel-asphalt isolationpier are described. At last, the simulated test on shaking table is carried out to researchthe isolation pier’s isolating affection and dynamic characteristics. The result showsthat, under the seismic wave incentive in test, the acceleration reduction factor isbetween0.34and0.57, it proves that the isolation pier have an effective isolationfunction. The acceleration reduction factor of isolation pier increase when a larger peakvalue of earthquake wave is inputted, In certain acceleration amplitude range, asphaltointment will delay the increase of this trend, it provides some damping for isolationsystem and beneficial to seismic isolation. The steel-asphalt isolation pier has anadequate safety margin in strong earthquake.
