It should be reformed for substation automation system(SAS for short) to meet the various requirements of smart grid, thus contributing to its further development. As traditional and digital substation can not meet the requirements of the smart grid, so make the smart substation. As an important change in the development history of SAS, smart substation is more optimized, more intelligent than digital substation.As an important automatic device of SAS, auto-tuning arc-suppression coil(AAC for short) is facing the intelligence reform with the development of smart substation. In order to solve the application of AAC in the smart substation, the paper studied AAC system for smart substation based on in-depth analysis of IEC61850standard, smart substation and AAC.First of all, two designs of AAC are proposed for smart substations in this article. One is local-control scheme with concentration layout between primary equipment and secondary equipment; the other is remote-control scheme with primary equipment and secondary equipment arranged separately, where the controller is divided into main control unit and intelligent measurement/control unit. AAC of both programs have single-phase ground fault line detection capabilities. Under deep analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the two designs, the article presents that local-control scheme of AAC should be given priority for smart substation below35kV, as it enjoys simpler structure, lower cost and the best technical economy.Then, considering the characteristics of IEC61850protocol and communication features of smart substation as well as special functions of AAC, a model for intelligent electronic device (IED for short) of AAC based on IEC61850is established in the paper, and its lays a foundation for communications networking between AAC and other IEDs.Finally, the paper developed two sets of AAC controller based on the above two structure program of AAC. And embedded technologies are used to achieve their functions in the following areas, such as high-performance hardware platform, Windows CE operating system and Microsoft Visual Studio2005(C#) based on IED programming. Wherein distributed program focuses on the photoelectric conversion section (that is fiber optical transceiver). In order to better achieve the AAC system, the paper analyzes the algorithm of auto-tuning function. And by analyzing the results of field trials, the reliability and feasibility of the device are verified.
