With the development of Smart Grid and continuous promotion of substation communication network and the system protocol IEC61850, intelligent substation construction has moved from theoretical research to engineering practice, which is logically distributed into three levels, the process, the bay and the station. Being the important devices in the process level, the merging unit and the intelligent terminal which attract much attention are the main signs of reflecting the level of intelligence. The merging unit combines different voltage and current signals, synchronization and protocol conversion. The intelligent terminal take whole charge of switching the bay level by rapid communication.In the pratical project construction and the operation of the management of intelligent substation, there is a trend towards the convergence of a variety of devices in functionality and the integrated development of modules. Therefore, it requires to integrate all devices which have similar function principles and related works in order to achieve the combination of features and the construction of the equipment. This paper studies a new device which merges the funciton of merging unit and intelligent terminal, that is the integrated intelligent unit.Firstly, this paper designs the workflow and the operating mode of the system based on the qualifications which are need to be achieved by integrated intelligent unit.In order to meet the device functionality requirements, this paper studies several existing mainstream hardware architecture design, shows the block diagram of the integrated intelligent unit in each hardware architecture, analysises the application of their respective programs for the integrate intelligent unit, and finally defines the system hardware architecture.After selecting hardware and deviding the functional work of hardware and software, this paper designs the overall system hardware and the functional model of software of the integrated intelligent unit. Meanwhile, it completes the selection of the chips in the hardware system and the circuit planning and also draws a connection diagram of the overall system chips. Furthermore, it describes a special function of the module formed by the software system respectively from top level to down level.This paper plannes the circuit design of the overall system and completes the circuit design of the main system circuit board and the PCB. In the integrated development environment of ADI Visual DSP++5.0, it writes the firmware drivers on the DSP chip with C language. Besides, in the integrated development environment of Altera Quartus Ⅱ11.1, it writes the firmware drivers on the FPGA chip with VHDL language.Finally, it provides a hardware design for the integrated intelligent unit for ultimated practical engineering application by verifying the features of hardware and software in test link.
