The theme of the21st century is environmental protection and strengthens the effective useof resources. Steel slag as a derivative of resources, and China has more than338million tons ofsteel slag accumulation, how to scientifically and effectively use in geotechnical engineering is avery interesting issue.About physical and chemical properties, mineral composition and mechanical properties ofsteel slag, both domestic and foreign scholars have conducted extensive research, and made a lotof research results. Steel slag has been fully applied to road construction projects, and itsrecovery rate is basically100%in Japan, the USA and other developed countries. But theresearch of steel slag recycling in China now is a low level. There is a great distance in thecomprehensive utilization of steel slag compared with the Western developed countries. Thedepth and breadth of research is not enough, and loss of steel slag resources is still big. People onthe use of slag in the construction field and immature technological achievements have resistantemotion and wait-and-see attitude. In China crude steel production increased and a large base ofsteel slag are the most important reasons. This paper through the understanding of steel slag asphalt mixture road performance, provide a theoretical basis for steel slag asphalt mixture as the pavement material. UsingMarshall and rutting test investigate its high temperature stability. Using Marshall immersionand freeze-thaw splitting test investigate its water stability. By seepage and surface structuredepth test investigate its permeability coefficient and structure depth. Based on the test datastatistics and analysis, test data compared with the data of the highway asphalt pavementspecification, steel slag can be used as pavement materials, and steel slag asphalt mixture hasbroad application prospects. The scientific and effective steel slag comprehensive utilization notonly can save resources and protect the natural environment but also bring remarkable economiceffect. This paper is limited laboratory test view point on the steel slag asphalt pavementperformance. The steel slag applied in road still needs a large number of field tests ofengineering example and theoretical analysis.Using steel slag in road construction is benefit to our country’s resources, environment andsteel slag “zero emissions”. Meet21st century themes and national sustainable developmentstrategies.
