Engineering geology deals with geological problems related to civil engineering projects as well as interaction between human engineering construction activities and geological environment. Since civil construction activities are conducted in various geological conditions, the former must be in some way related to and limited by the later or otherwise. The influence of geological conditions on civil works may come in two ways:by affecting safety in construction, stability of quality and normal use after completion, and by increasing the cost of construction. Yiwu used to be a small county, where geological survey was conducted only for a limited number of specific civil construction projects. With the scale of the city expanding rapidly, such kind of geological survey will no longer meet the demand of the urban development. Therefore, a systematic and overall research and evaluation of geological conditions for civil construction in Yiwu is quite necessary for the city’s urban construction planning.The content of this thesis includes:1. a brief description of regional geological conditions in Yiwu;2. geological classification and evaluation of different areas for civil construction;3. case studies;4. calculation and evaluation of foundation bearing capacity of Yiwu’s planning area;5. construction suitability appraisal of the planning area.The research of the paper is pioneering in that it divides the city’s planning area into sections of various geological conditions for the first time. The paper also makes assessment of foundation bearing capacity of different sections of the planning area, investigates the geological problems related to civil construction projects and makes an appropriate evaluation of civil engineering feasibility.
