This paper analyzed the characteristics of earthquake in recent years. combining with thenew rules of seismic design, this paper proposed performance-based seismic design.performance-based seismic design was the main trend of the designs now.This paper explained the main content of the performance-based seismic design, andwith an engineering example, used direct displacement-based method to design, thenanalysised designed structure with nonlinear static analysis, then compared prior assumptionlateral shape with analysised result, compared and analysised the deformation ability and theseismic performance of the structure in different conditions, Also compared the structurebasement shear of the seismic design method and the traditional design method, finallyanalysised designed structure through the nonlinear time history analysis and verified itsrationality.From the design example we found that the displacement index used in this paper hadthe characteristis of simple and intuitive, it could accurately reflect seismic performance ofstructure in the design. throuth using interstory drift index to quantitative structureperformance level in this paper, it reflected the main ideas of the performance-based seismicdesign theory. through comparing the performance-based seismic design and the traditionaldesign, the former could more ensure structural seismic performance under the powerfulearthquake. through the nonlinear time history analysis of the structure, we could found thatperformance-based seismic design and the analytical results are consistent.
