The requirements for smart and easy to customize low voltage powerdistribution management system is becoming more and more popular aspeople are pursuing higher energy efficiency. This is especially true after theconcept of smart grid is spreading all over the world. A lot of customers arerequiring that the low voltage power distribution management system shouldbe smart enough to perform automatic remote control, real time systeminformation feedback, easy to use and maintain, easy to be customized, goodreporting system and so on.To address these issues, firstly, this paper is showed the results of theresearch done by the author on the currently working low voltage powerdistribution systems. And all the currently working systems are divided intothree categories according to the automation degree of the control andcommunication in the system. All these three categories are described in thispaper. Meanwhile, the author pointed the issues in all these systems andproposed ways to be improved.Based on the research results on existing system architectures, this paperproposes new hardware system architecture for smart low voltage powerdistribution system. And this architecture is practical since it’s actually aimproved solution with innovative technologies. The newly proposedhardware architecture is designed based on modular design theory. Thismeans it’s easy to upgrade the system and customize the system. The smart hardware system works by detecting the switching gears and collecting theirinformation. Based on the network technology, the system can automaticallycontrol the switch gears through the smart system management software. Andthis software makes the whole low voltage power distribution managementsystem smarter and more visible to users. Thanks to the network technology,the system administrator can not only manage and maintain the systemremotely. He can also reuse the resource provided by the system supplier todiagnose the remote system issues and solve them quickly.Also in this paper, a major part is to introduce the design of a smartcontrol module to be used in the proposed smart low voltage powerdistribution system. The paper described all the basic functions of the controlmodule and the performance of different function blocks on the module. Infact, the smart control module is a key function module of the smart hardwaresystem of the proposed smart low voltage power distribution system. Thedesign work of the control module is split into two parts: hardware design andfirmware design.At last, the paper listed all the tests for the smart control module. And allthe test results and test data are showed for some critical tests. Based on thetest results and results of the data analysis of the tests, it’s sure that the controlmodule can be used in harsh industrial working environment. And it’s safe touse this module in the smart hardware system architecture. All this testsguarantees the whole low power distribution system works safe and stableafter installing the smart control module.
