Mechanism of the energy consumption of neighborhood is focused. The effects ofspatial factors are investigated and principles of low-carbon neighborhood planning areproposed. Carbon emission and energy consumption are critical elements on the topic ofglobal climate change. Carbon emission from residential behavior is main source incities. Research on carbon emission of neighborhood is rare and thus is selected as thescope of this paper. Factors affecting energy consumption of neighborhood areinvestigated.Carbon emission and energy consumption of neighborhood is usually discussed in aqualitative way in China. Quantitative method is selected using the data collected withthe support of Karamay government. Linear regression and discrete choice model areused in this paper to discuss the relationship between energy consumption and thefactors. Choices of transportation means are also discussed.Effects of attitude on energy consumption are discussed in this paper with thesocio-economic and spatial factors. Close relationship between residents’ satisfactionand their behavior is proven. Actual effects on carbon emission of neighborhood arecreated by attitudes of residents. In regression, the effects of satisfaction of temperatureand ventilation of residents on household energy consumption are stated. Use ofair-conditioning is proven to have strong effects on household energy consumptionwhich calculated without spatial heating. It is found that transportation energyconsumption is more variable and the relationships with socio-economic and spatialfactors are not direct.Discrete choice model is usually used for economic and transportational choicemaking questions. Through the model, relationships between factors on transportationmeans and energy consumption are established. The number of bus routes bypassingneighborhoods is proven significant effect on choice between bus and private car. According to the results from the regressions and models, principles of low-carbonneighborhood planning for Karamay are proposed.
