Research On Reader Space Of Hybrid University Libraries

A university library is the symbol of the whole university campus,represents the cultural trend of university and society and gathers the variousdisciplines of knowledge and activities of students.As the management model of the university library is continuouslytransforming from the open-shelf one to the closed-shelf one, the library spaceitself is moving into the process of informatization, openness, humanity,personality and intelligence. Nowadays, the space model of the universitylibrary has been changing largely from a traditional space of the single functionto a service center, a learning center and a living center with diverse functions.It is becoming the place of learning, researching, communication and otherkinds of activities.In this tendency, the reader space model of the university library issupposed to be self-improving to reflect the specific requirement of the hybridtrend. It has to adapt to the requirements of using information technology,variety of learning patterns of readers, appreciating the beauty of space art andshaping outer space in the era of information.In the recent20years, some new-built university libraries in China arebeing in a great progress on design concepts, function using compared with thepast, but there are also many problems. At the same time, there is also adisparity on the design methods of reader space between domestic and foreignuniversity library, therefore, studying foreign excellent library cases has thevital significance to the design of new-built university libraries in China.Based on the above background, the paper focuses on domestic and foreignnew-built university library buildings in nearly20years. The method is to read alarge number of books on the theory of library, investigate the domesticuniversity libraries and select the cases of foreign university libraries.This paper studies the theory of library and space, and sums up the hybridspace model and some existing problems of the university library’s reader space in some aspects of the compound of information technology and traditionalspace, the one of new learning patterns and learning space, the one of the designapproach and the traditional function and the one of the design of library’s outerspace and the campus space hoping that it will has the certain guidance andreference significance to the design of contemporary Chinese universitylibraries.
