Qiansimen Bridge is the main traffic line which connecting Jiangbei district withYuzhong district of Chongqing. It is a bridge crossing the river which combined theroad traffic with the city rail transport as a whole one. And it is designed for a singletower with single cable plane part of the cable-stayed bridge. Because of its importantlocation,heavy traffic and its busy traffic load, it is easy to produce fatigue damage inthe long-term traffic load which can lead to the safe operation of the bridge. So it isnecessary for us to design a health monitoring system to detect and evaluate thestructural condition of the bridge.In this paper, according to the structural characteristics and monitoring requirementsof Qiansimen Bridge, the,health monitoring system was designed. The system includethe environmental monitoring module, the bridge tower and pier settlement monitoringmodule, the cable tension monitoring module, the stress and strain monitoring module,the dynamic characteristics monitoring module and the vehicle load monitoring module.Next, the managing operational systems of Qiansimen Bridge were carried out. Itconsists of the sensor subsystem, the data acquisition and preprocessing subsystem, thedata management subsystem, the warning subsystem, the health information showssubsystem and the communication subsystem. Taking into account the complexity of thesite environment and the double-decker bridge, the environmental monitoring systemmodule, the stress and strain monitoring module, the dynamic characteristics of themonitoring module and the vehicle load monitoring module, the fiber grating sensorasystem was adopted. Finally, the system was designed by the LABVIEW software. thedata transmission of each module used a combination design of wired and wirelesscommunication. As a result, the system can fulfill the requirements of the real-timemonitoring system of Qiansimen Bridge.The research of the Qiansimen Bridge health monitoring system has theoretical significance and practical value. It can provide a good example for road and raildouble-decker bridge structural health monitoring, and provides a reference for themonitoring of the same type of bridge.
