Research On The Preservation Of Baoding’s Historical And Cultural Heritage During City Renovation

The thesis discusses the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage in theCity of Baoding. With a long history of2，000years， Baoding belongs to the secondbatch of the National Famous Historical and Cultural City. From the s17th century tothe middle of the20th century， Baoding had been the viceroy government office ofZhili Province and twice the capital city of Hebei Province successively. As thepolitical， economic and cultural center of Hebei Province， Baoding has the richesthistorical and cultural resources in Hebei and owns the most sites protected at orabove the provincial level in China. At present， there are36sites protected for theirhistorical and cultural value in Baoding， among which5are protected at the nationallevel，7are protected at the provincial level and24are protected at municipal level.In addition， there are12houses under special local protection. Generally speaking，sites that are protected at higher level are better than others， i.e. sites under nationallevel protection are better than those under provincial level protection， sites underprovincial level protection are better than those under municipal level protection，most houses under special local protection are dilapidated and in a bad state of repair.The architecture in a city is the product of its special culture and history and a symbolof its spirit and human civilization. The taste of culture is not formed in a short time，but gradually evolved during the combination of a city’s strong history and thecontemporary renovation. The history of a city is related to its culture and is in linewith its continued character and taste. The length of history is in a positive correlationwith and hence important to a city’s sustainable development. Consequently，highlighting Baoding’s historical connotation is naturally becoming necessary toenhance the city’s taste. Along with the economic and population boom in China，urbanization has become a social development trend and majority of the cities arefacing the challenge of renovation. We have been beset by problems such as breakageof historical and cultural heritage in the old city area， aging of the physicalenvironment and disappearance of historical and cultural characteristics. It hasbecome a new research subject of city development to consider rebuilding theprosperity of the old city area， reasonably protecting the cultural heritage andincreasing the city’s spiritual function. Therefore， research on the preservation of thehistorical and cultural heritage during the city renovation is practically important atthe present stage. The thesis adopts a point-line-surface structure to analyze the currentdevelopment status of Baoding City and the characteristics of its historical andcultural heritage， provides a summary and prospect of the research on thepreservation of historical and cultural heritage in Baoding. The author brings forwarda research method that covers different layers from protecting building structures andstreets of historical and cultural value to protecting Baoding City as a whole toexpound and prove the protection plan， aiming to let Baoding City be protected ashistorical and cultural heritage， organically combine protection with developmentand provide instructions to the objective world.
