This thesis describes technology of hull model data exchange between TRIBON andCATIA. Hull model data is successfully translated through a standardized hull xml file anddata extraction/modeling interfaces. Many CAD/CAM softwares are used in shipbuilding industry along with thedevelopment of CAD/CAM technology, and users often need to exchange3D ship modeldata between different CAD systems. CAD systems usually store and handle model data indifferent way because their modeling methods are distinct and CAD vendors offerproducts developed by diverse programing languages for various purposes. As a result,CAD data exchange and sharing is a big problem. The existing data exchange standardshave partly solved this problem. However, these standards are established for generalproduct data exchange, they can’t meet the requirments from shipbuilding industry. Abetter solution is developing a system just for ship model data exchange.TRIBON system is specifically developed for ship design, supports all disciplinesand phases within shipbuilding. It has many customers worldwide and is very useful inship detail design and production design. CATIA system is also used by severalshipbuilding enterprises, it has powerful capabilities of3D hybrid modeling and assemblysimulating. Through a simulation of ship production process, CATIA can find mistakes inship design and make suggestions for ship construction. Therefore it’s practically useful tostudy data exchange technology between these two systems, especially from TRIBON toCATIA. This thesis concertrates on hull model data exchange technology between TRIBONand CATIA, and presents a means to fulfill this task. After the comparison of various CADdata exchange methods, the way of neutral file and two interfaces is used for hull modeldata exchange. Because of its advantages, XML file is chosen to be the neutral file formatand the way to store hull model data in XML file is described and standardized. Dataextraction interface and modeling interface is developed using secondary developmenttools of TRIBON and CATIA. Finally, a data exchange system is built and hull model datais translated successfully.
